What's Buzzin'

BEESBALL
More on the Matt Murton call-up. His high school coach had nice words for Georgia Tech:

"I was a little surprised he wasn't drafted, but I have talked to a lot of scouts who say playing at a school like Georgia Tech or Miami is just as good as playing in the minor leagues," Lyons said.

Hey recruits, don't forget that........... By the way, in case you forgot, Matt's younger brother Luke begins his Georgia Tech beesball career next spring, as he enrolls in classes in the fall.............. By the way, in his major league debut, Murton went 2-2, with a double, a walk, a sac fly, while going 0-2 on Saturday......... RamblinWreck posted a nice little story on Murton's call-up as well........... Jay Payton got his wish from the Red Sox, sort of. He wanted out, and now he is out, getting optioned to the minors. Boston has 10 days to decide whether to trade or release him. Rumors I am hearing are that he could get traded to the Oakland A's, for reliever Chad Bradford. Bradford has been rehabbing from back surgury.............. Former Jacket Jason Perry gets some PT over at 3rd base..........

FYI - Jason Neighborgall has been assigned to rookie-level Missoula, where he will work with Mel Stottlemyre Jr. to sort out mechanical issues with his pitching motion. I guess the real work on that control issue starts now..........

Also, here is a note on Brandon Boggs

And in my review of June (7 / 2 Report) I advised you to "Keep an eye on Brandon Boggs, a 2004 fourth round selection out of Georgia Tech who has struggled terribly throughout his brief pro career. Though he hit just .239, he reached base at a .350 clip and showed some power, slugging .463 with four homers [in June]."

Boggs (.291 / .392 / .518) continued to make me look prescient yesterday, going 2-4 with a homer, improving to an absurd .500 / .565 / .850 with two dingers, 11 RBIs and three stolen bases through the first week of play in July.

HOOPS
Little story on how our Jacket's are faring in summer action from RamblinWreck.com......... I mentioned that Javaris Crittenton won the MVP of the Adidas Camp "all-star" game. Here is a compilation of his stats, as I have them:

July 5th morning game...... 21 pts, 7 assists
July 6th morning game...... 24 pts, 9-15, 8 assists (vs Wayne Ellington)
July 6th evening game...... 5 assists
July 7th evening game...... 28 pts
July 8th All-Star game..... 25 pts, 7 assists, 2 boards (vs DJ Augustin)*

Most of these stats came from the Adidas camp site, but I saw conflicting reports by some of the recruiting sites. But this is the best I could do. In the All-star game, he was teamed with Gerald Henderson (Duke-bound) and Stanley Robinson (whom he mentioned he would try to sell GT). They went up against a team with DJ Augustin at PG, Wayne Ellington (UNC bound), Quincy Poindexter and Thaddeus Young. Javaris was the highest ranked kid (#26) on his team. The rest were all 26 - 50. The team they played had 2 top-5 players, and another 3 in the top 20. Javaris led his team to a 30 point victory. Nice. Of course this is not exactly "team" ball.................. On a separate note, our friend Jodie Meeks scored 28 points, and was 6-9 from 3pt range in one of his late week games. Nice to see him performing well......

Coach Cremins continues to ride the charity golf circuit, this time playing in Myrtle Beach with George Rogers, Dwight Clark, Jim Stuckey, Del Curry and many others......... Looks like Luke Schenscher will team up with BJ Elder in the Reebok Rocky Mountain League Revue. Here's the roster....

FOOTBALL
Chris Reis says that Reuben Houston's arrest has impacted the psyche of the team. Not clear if he means in a good or bad way................. A reminder, players report to fall practice August 5th, with media day and first practice August 6th.................. Will Glover, the former Jacket WR has 525 yards receiving for NIFL Lakeland Thunderbolts. Oh, by the way, the NIFL is the National Indoor Football League......... Here's a look at running backs in the state of Florida, but also on a wider scale, and they say the ACC has the best group of backs of any conference........

GOLF
Chan Song is going for a victory in the US Mens Amateur Public Links Tourney, which would give him a berth into the Masters. However, he is going to have to beat out a chick to do it............ Here's the entire field...........
