Robert Brooks of Saginaw, Mich., was a key reserve on Georgia Tech's NCAA tournament Final Four college basketball team last season. But come January, when the Yellow Jackets begin this season's run through the tough Atlantic Coast Conference, Brooks will be enduring a tougher and more demanding regimen — boot camp at Parris Island, S.C., as a raw recruit.

For the 6-foot-8 Brooks, who will graduate from Georgia Tech in December and could have gone into the service as an officer, "it was time to start thinking seriously about my future."

He said he plans to serve two years as an enlisted Marine to learn what it takes to be a leader before applying for Officer Candidate School.
