Richard, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound freshman, has worked himself into a rotation at defensive tackle, despite a knee injury that limited his work in the preseason.
"I've lost my freshman status on the field. I kind of have an idea of what's going on," he said. "The time on the field as a freshman is just a learning experience. It pays dividends later on."
