Good article on the importance of a good PG

Story here, with this mention of J.Jack:

Impact on two programs

As much as any team in the nation in the last two seasons, Izzo's Spartans struggled with the void created by the premature and unsuccessful departure of Marcus Taylor.

When the Michigan State coaches felt that Taylor might leave after his sophomore season, they thought they discovered a solution. They had three consecutive Final Four appearances and a championship to sell to Jack, then an outstanding high school prospect.

"They were telling me that Marcus was going to leave," Jack says. "They were saying if he leaves, then I'd have an opportunity to come in and play a lot. I just didn't see that he was going to leave."

Jack was skeptical, at first, about the Georgia Tech program, where Paul Hewitt had completed his first season as coach. Jack's mother, Louise, reminded him of the special place he could occupy if he helped establish a winning tradition.

"That's one thing she really put in my head," he says. "Everybody can just go to the winning program. But it takes a strong will, a strong-minded person, to go to that program that might not have the mystique, the championships in recent years."

Jack committed to Georgia Tech and afterward watched the scroll at the bottom of his television reveal that Marcus Taylor was entering the NBA draft. The team Jack selected reached the championship game in his sophomore year. The team he did not choose has not been to the Final Four since.

"It was never smooth," Izzo says of life without a natural point guard. "Every day was a root canal. It's not the players' fault. It's not anybody's fault. It's just a reality."
