Mark Tiexiera is only one of 5 position players that has been drafted by MLB among the first 10 picks out of high school. Link here.
In 2000, only three college position players were taken in the first round, none among the top 10. In fact, in the past five years there have been only five college position players taken among the first 10 picks in the draft:
- 2003: Weeks to Milwaukee.
- 2002: Shortstop Drew Myers of South Carolina, No. 10 to Texas.
- 2001: Third baseman Mark Teixeira of Georgia Tech, No. 5 to Texas, and shortstop Chris Burke of Tennessee, No. 10 to Houston.
- 1999: Catcher Eric Munson of Southern Cal, No. 3 to Detroit in 1999.
It's not like they were late bloomers.
Munson was a second-round draft choice of Atlanta when he came out of Mount Carmel High School in San Diego in 1996.
Teixeira was a ninth-round pick of Boston when he came out of St. Joseph High School in Severna Park, Md., in 1998 and turned down more than $1 million to attend Georgia Tech.
