Nice story on this incoming beesball recruit: The player Sequoyah coach Dave Audia calls the best he's ever coached finished 5-3, with 72 strikeouts in 41 innings and a 0.63 ERA. Payne was just as effective in the batter's box, hitting .433, with six homers and 30 RBIs in leading the Chiefs to within one game of the state playoffs.
Payne is headed to Georgia Tech, where he'll be an outfielder and will likely get some time on the mound as a reliever. He leaves Sequoyah as the record-holder for career hits, doubles, RBIs, total bases and slugging percentage. He's in the top two of all six Sequoyah pitching records, including first in innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts per inning pitched, wins and ERA. The only pitching record he doesn't hold is career saves, and he's only two behind the leader.
"Danny was the ingredient in our games that made the other players believe," Audia said.
