Also, college rules prohibit a punter from kicking the ball backward after a bad snap. Had Chason executed such a panic kick through the end zone, Georgia Tech would have had the option of taking the safety or accepting a 5-yard penalty and possession from the spot of the foul (first-and-goal at the 5) -- a hypothetical judgment confirmed by Clemson-Georgia Tech game referee Ron Cherry on Sunday in response to an inquiry from Clemson.
