Interesting notes, although the guy is a GT grad.
Due to its exceptionally high admission standards (highest SATs of any publicly funded university in the United States), many people assume that Georgia Tech is a private institution like Cal Tech or MIT. Despite Tech being a part of the University System of Georgia, the University of Georgia in Athens enjoys significantly stronger fan support than Georgia Tech even in Tech's home city of Atlanta.
The only cause to which I can attribute this discrepancy is the feeling among most Georgians that Georgia Tech is an elitist institution to which they themselves would not qualify for admission. They are probably right.
Perhaps The News should have included a comparison of the academic stature of the SEC schools (only Vandy is recognized as outstanding; all of the others are mediocre) versus the ACC schools (only Clemson, Florida State and Virginia Tech are suspect; all of the rest are excellent academic universities). Isn't that what college is really supposed to be about? Dave Garza, -- Georgia Institute of Technology, -- Class of 1987, -- Homewood --
Speaking of academics, check this out. Five guys from the basketball team, 30 from the football team and the entire golf team made dean's list for the spring. Outstanding!! Anyone who has been through GT knows this really means something. Congrats!!!
