Beesball Notes

On Austin Jackson................................... On Micah Owings..................... More on recent commit Chase Burnette...................

And the best news of all, another new recruit in beesball - Derek Dietrich

For Derek Dietrich, it was the biggest decision in his young life.

After all, the gifted middle infielder/relief pitcher from St. Ignatius High School had a lot to choose from.

Dietrich, after being recruited by more than 80 schools, has decided to play baseball at Georgia Tech. The two-time Plain Dealer seven-county All-Star says he will sign a national letter of intent with the Yellow Jackets during the NCAA's signing period in November.

"The coaches, the facilities, the climate, and of course [Georgia Tech] is right in downtown Atlanta," said Dietrich, who was recruited by Yellow Jackets coach Danny Hall as a shortstop. Dietrich, who turned 17 last week and will be entering his senior year at St. Ignatius next month, said Georgia Tech also plans to have him close games.

A left-handed batter and a right-handed pitcher, Dietrich has been selected to compete in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic on Aug.12 at San Diego State's Tony Gwynn Stadium. His coach for the Aflac game will be Kevin Maris, son of the late New York Yankees star slugger Roger Maris.
