The "Paul Hewitt Effect"

That is the term that has been used to describe what happened to GT when they brought in Paul Hewitt. A little-known coach who blows up on the national scene. Miami is hoping for the same thing with Frank Haith. Story here.

Four years ago, an ACC school in a major metropolitan market took a chance on a little-known coach who had a reputation as a strong recruiter.

The school was Georgia Tech. The coach was Paul Hewitt, who last season led the Yellow Jackets to the NCAA finals.

Miami is hoping it will find similar lightning in a bottle with Frank Haith, who in April was hired to take the Hurricanes through their first basketball season in ACC history.

I have to say one thing though. In ALL the stories referencing the success of Paul Hewitt and other schools looking to follow suit, I have never seen reference to a white coach. The "Paul Hewitt Effect" really means bringing in a talented, young, up-and-coming coach who is also black. You see it referred to at Miami, Clemson, St.Johns and the list goes on. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it is an interesting observation.
