Craig Neal - a name I had not heard in awhile. I was there the night he set the single game assist record at GT with 19 against Duke back in February of 1988. That was a magic year for him. In fact, if you look at the record books, he has 7 of the top 12 single game assist records in GT history, with games of 19, 17, 14, 14, 14, 13, 13. All but one of those games were within a month of one another. I mean check this out:
Assists:
2-3-88.........14 assists vs Duke
2-8-88.........14 assists vs Maryland
2-17-88........13 assists vs Maryland
2-20-88.......14 assists vs NC St
2-25-88.......17 assists vs UVA
2-28-88.......19 assists vs Duke
Don't tell me that's not special - right in the heart of ACC hoops. That was a fun time. So what's the point of all this? Well, Craig Neal was just named Associate Head Basketball Coach at the Iowa men's hoops team (story here):
Craig Neal, an assistant coach and talent scout with the NBA’s Toronto Raptors for the past eight years, has been named Associate Head Basketball Coach at the University of Iowa. Neal’s appointment was announced Friday by Coach Steve Alford and becomes effective Aug. 1.
That's just great for him. Glad to see him back in college hoops and maybe this is a stepping stone to larger things. Congrats!!!
