Daily Swarm

THE POLLS ARE OUT
GT moves up to #14 all the way from #19 in the AP. Dook drops from #3 to #5. St.Josephs takes over the top spot. Check this out - GT #14, WF #15, UNC #16, NCST #17. It's funny enough that you have 4 ACC teams in a row, but that NCST is the LAST in the bunch really is a joke. Sorry but NCST is the clear #2 in the ACC this year and deserves a higher ranking. They certainly deserve to be higher than GT (who they swept this year) and WF (who they swept). I don't get it............... GT is #17 in the RPI and #7 in the Sagarin Ranking.............. In the coaches poll we moved up to #18 (were

J.JACK GETS FOXSPORTS.COM'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK / ACC HONORS
Nice going Jarrett (story here)- you deserve the honor, but let's see a repeat performance on Friday......... Jarrett also was honored as the ACC POW for averaging 16 points, and 10 boards versus Dook / FSU.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - JASON COLLIER
The Hawks did sign Jason Collier to a 10-day contract, not exactly long-term. However, he scored 16 points had 5 boards and 2 assists in his 1st game against the Cavs (a loss). Here is more about Collier. Does anyone here remember Collier being over 7 feet tall? For some reason my memory was about 6'10" or so. He is listed now at about 7'2". I didn't believe it when I saw it.

WES HODGES GETS ACC BEESBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Major props to the true freshman, who went 10-13 last week in 4 games. For the season he is GT's leading hitter at .413 and 12 RBI's. (story here).

ALL ACC HOOPS TEAMS ANNOUNCED
Well, here is how it breaks down
1st team - McCants, Hodge, Pickett, Duhon, Gray
2nd team - Redick, Elder, Melvin, May, S.Williams
3rd team - Paul, Felton, Deng, Gilchrest, Jack
honorable mention - Brown, Ewing, D.Smith

All-frosh - Deng, Paul, Atsur, A.Johnson, JR Reynolds
honorable mention - Strawberry, Hamilton

All-defensive - Williams, Duhon, Pickett, Paul, Manuel
honorable mention - Hodge, Ford, Levy

My opinion is that they probably mostly got it right - keep Redick off 1st team, Jack / Elder get recognized. I only have one gripe - the best defensive team in the ACC has no players on the all-defensive team or even honorable mention. OK, maybe it goes to show that defense truly is a team effort - but McHenry could have easily gotten some recognition here. It was disappointing that Luke didn't get at least 3rd team all-ACC, but they don't pick by position. They pick the best players regardless of position.

THEORIES OF HOW TO SUCCEED IN THE POST-SEASON
This is an interesting article about popular theories of success for the post-season in college hoops. (story here). Things like strong guard play, experience, depth, defense wins, etc. My theory is that the team that scores the most points 6 games in a row usually cuts down the nets. Although I haven't contact any major publications with my theory yet.

BILLY DONOVAN GETS TAGGED AS A "BOBBY CREMINS"
Ouch - see this quote - "So according to the knee jerks, Donovan is Bobby Cremins minus the mop-top. He can ravenously recruit, but he can't develop. He can assemble, but he can't coach. He can reach the NCAA Tournament, but he can't advance in it. Or so it goes."

WEST NOTT EARNS ACC TENNIS CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nott went 3-1 to help GT to victories over #27 Minn and #45 Oregon. Nice going!! (story here).

CONGRATS TO PAUL HEWITT AND THE TEAM
..on a fantastic regular season. RamblinRed over at the Hive re-caps some of the accomplishments of this team (see here). Really outstanding when put head-to-head against some of our best teams. In one of the best and most competitive ACC seasons EVER, we have held our own and our team has made us proud.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH PAT CARTER
Well, I had reported a possible injury to Pat Carter yesterday and re-canted it because of hating to trade in rumors about injuries. Still not confirmed, but it was reported that Chan Gailey at the Gainesville GT Alumni Club said Carter was injured doing agility drills and would miss spring practice. Again - hearing it from a 3rd source, but take it for what it's worth - supposedly came from Coach Gailey but the report is 2nd hand. If it's true, I really feel bad for Carter, who injured himself last year, preventing him from competing for the job Ball ended up getting.

WANT A DVD/CD-ROM OF THE DOOK / GT GAME????
Well, just head over to this site (thanks GTDean) and download it for yourself. Ain't technology great!!!!

THE RANDOLPH MORRIS SAGA CONTINUES
Well the "insiders" over at the Kentucky boards are more confident than ever that Morris will announce for UK and it will happen in the next 3 weeks. All we can do is hope they are wrong - stay tuned.

BEST MOMENTS IN THE ACCHere is one writer's best ACC moments of the year.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - MATT KUCHAR
Looks like Matt may be regaining his form a bit. Here is a nice story about him from Golf Digest.

SOME ACC SCHOOLS ALREADY GETTING A JUMP ON RECRUITING
There are already a handful of high school junior ballers who have committed to ACC schools, although nobody to GT. (story here). Two common reasons cited for declaring early are #1 - players not wanting to go through the rigerous recruiting process and #2 - players wanting to make sure they get a spot with the team of their choice. The commits are non-binding so it doesn't really matter too much. In fact, one of the early recruits (Joey Cameron) who had committed to Clemson has now backed off and wants to go through the process - good for him.
