Duke / GT Games Stories

GTECH'S TRICK NO TREAT FOR DUKE

READY JACKETS ROUGH UP DUKE

REVENGE ON THE YELLOWJACKETS
Good points about the inconsistent play of the offensive line being critical to our offensive success, especially PJ:

But even Daniels, the Yellow Jackets' workhorse, struggled at times. Six of his 24 carries resulted in negative yards behind the Yellow Jackets' patchwork offensive line.

"It was feast or famine," Gailey said. "It was either big runs or minus-3. There was no in-between."
And how about this - His five longest carries covered 95 yards; his 19 other carries just 19 yards

DANIELS LEADS GT PAST DUKE 24-7

JACKETS DEFENSE DOMINATES IN WIN

JACKETS BOTTLE-UP DEVILS, MOVE TO 4-2

DANIELS CREATES PROBLEMS WITH ARM TOO
And note the injuries just keep piling up, particularly on the O-Line:
Anoai left the game in the third quarter with a right ankle injury and did not return.
Center Andy Tidwell-Neal (left ankle) started, but he re-injured the ankle in the second quarter. He remained in the game.
Tidwell-Neal’s replacement, Kevin Tuminello, also injured his ankle Saturday.

DEVILS FALL TO JACKETS

GAME NOTES
Is the defense back on all cylinders? Try and tell me E.Henderson doesn't make a difference:
-- After recording just three sacks in its first three games, Tech has had 17 in the last three games, including 12 (Tech had 5 today) in their last two.

-- With only 84 yards rushing by the Blue Devils, this is the 15th time in 32 games under defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta that the Jackets have held their opponent to under 100 yards rushing.

-- One week after holding Maryland to 81 yards of total offense, Tech held Duke to 184 yards of total offense. Prior to these two games, the last time Tech held an ACC opponent under 200 yards of total offense was 1991 in a game against Wake Forest, in which the Deacons managed just 149 yards of total offense

DRIVE STATS - ALL THE DIRTY LAUNDRY
Click here for the drive log, which shows that we had a hard time building time-eating, yardage crunching drives. Our drive times were 0:57, 2:01 (minutes), 0:45, 1:40, 1:45, 1:47, 2:19, 0:13, 0:23, 4:39, 2:05, 3:39, 3:27, 1:44. Nothing sustained, but we still stuck with the gameplan of grinding away with the run to setup the pass. Look, I know it's not "sexy", but you know what? This offensive philosophy, when executed in a sound, fundamental way, with a few playmakers, can consistently win games. Would you like the brilliant Ralph Freidgen complex pass-first, multi-leveled offense? The one that had 81 total yards against GT and about 91 total yards against NCST today? Of course they're up 10 yards, so THAT's progress - right???

POST-GAME QUOTES
Coach Gailey said it all:
Comment on the play of the offense:
"Our offense played sporadically, sometimes we looked great and sometimes we didn't. We had opportunities to score points, but we dropped some passes. If you don't drop passes then all the sudden the game is way out of hand and not even an issue. We can look very good and we can look average."
I love PJ Daniels' quote about the halfback pass:
On the touchdown pass -- "The line did a great job of blocking and coach told me to sell the fake, so I sold the fake. When they came into the huddle and called the play, 'halfback pass', I said 'what' and then when I got the pitch I realized that I was supposed to throw the ball and Calvin [Johnson] got open."

TECH HOLDS 2ND STRAIGHT OPPONENT UNDER 200 YARDS
We're not the only ones that would like to see a stronger passing game:
Tech rushed for 183 yards, but Gailey said the miscues in the passing game hurt the offense.

"I like our rushing stats but I'd really like to throw for more yardage," Gailey said. "I'd like to have a higher completion percentage. We dropped at least three passes and two of them could have been for touchdowns."

DEVILS HELD TO 184 YARDS, GT RECOVERS 2 FUMBLES
I like the Chris Reis attitude:
"Last week we started it out. This week we continued it," linebacker Chris Reis said. "We're going to be a consistent defense week in and week out."

TECH NEVER FAR FROM KING'S HEART
A nice piece from Furman Bisher

WHERE ARE THEY NOW - DORIAN "DOBY" ROGERS
This is Charlie Rogers' cousin, and he played for Tech and is now an assistant hs coach in Duluth GA.
