I've seen some press going out to FSU early this season and while we can't answer this question based on their performance, we can criticize their incredibly soft schedule.
I understand the thought behind the schedule--they put it together several years ago when they were getting pounded by ACC opponents and needed to boost their win total for tournament consideration, blah, blah, blah. Still, check this out:
11/21 Maine W 69-49 1-0
11/24 Georgetown KY W 81-67 2-0
11/26 Nicholls State W 99-54 3-0
11/28 South Carolina St W 81-46 4-0
12/1 Northwestern W 71-53 5-0
12/3 Mississippi W 66-60 6-0
12/6 Fair Dickinson W 83-46 7-0
Yeah, they're 7-0...sort of, anyway. That squeaker against 2-3 Mississippi is the only game that stands out as some sort of challenge. No wonder they're barely getting votes in both polls...not that this gives anyone evidence that they deserve any at all!
Pickett is clearly a big time player, and he was on the team that knocked off Dook last year, but it's hard to make an argument for or against this team yet. While the Big Ten challenge is a start for the ACC, it's about time that we started scheduling some real teams early. For the first time in years, I think Tech's schedule is a nice mix...I think that we've tended to go overboard in the past, playing a murderer's row of games that leaves us 5-5 heading into conference play and needing 13-14 incredible wins against great teams. FSU's RPI should be in triple digits unless they beat a few ACC teams--they deserve it with this schedule, unfortunately.
This will all work itself out, but it's interesting how different teams have gone about their business early.
