Beesball: Jackets face Furman today

First pitch - 4:00pm - time for action............ Here's a decent preview of the ATL regional, from a Gamecock website. Furman is a hot team, so don't think anything will come easy........ Here's more on the Gamecocks................ Wes Hodges will not take this post-season for granted, after what happened last season. A great read.......... Another great read on super-freshman Matt Wieters, the do-it-all-kid. Obviously he has his teammate's respect:

"That kid can do anything," said junior outfielder Steven Blackwood.

"I've never seen anything like it, a freshman coming in and dominating the game the way he does. The way he takes control and nothing phases him."

Added Blackwood: "He's everywhere."

"It's very rare you get a player like that," Blackwood said. "You see guys who are talented come in the program, but you don't see guys who have it mentally and physically. He's a kid who works very hard and people are always happy to see him succeed."

The pitchers get some PR time too, as Blake Wood has this article written about him. Nicely done.............. Not to be outdone, they also did a story on Tim Gustafson. These two guys must be buddies, because their are quotes from each in both stories (about the other one)......

.........Micah Owings named 2nd team All-American by Louisville Slugger.......... Don't forget that Tulane's coach was an assistant at Tech........... Duke's head coaching spot is open, and Georgia Tech assistant Bobby Maranda is interested.......... SI.com looks at their most interesting story lines in the tourney.......

In softball news, here's mention of an incoming recruit for the ladyjackets:

Douglas Tigers pitcher Kayla Dunn quieted the West in her first four innings of work. The Georgia Tech-bound star allowed only two walks and a single, but used her off-speed pitches for strike outs and ground outs.

"Kayla Dunn is really really unique," Peel said. Dunn enjoyed playing one more high school game before playing college ball in Georgia.

"That was awesome," Dunn said. "Obviously, you're going to play hard and it was fun playing everyone before they left (high school)."

After her final game with the Tigers during the playoffs, Dunn never would have expected to be invited to participate in the first-year event, especially after recovering from a knee injury.

"I definitely thought Douglas was my last game in high school. This was a good idea. I think it's fun."
