Matt Rhodes - Stepping up on the O-Line

Nice article on Matt Rhodes, the young offensive lineman who stepped up this past season. He is likely to be an anchor on the line for the next few years.

On how he got his opportunity:

Even though Rhodes was ecstatic about another opportunity, the outcome of Brezina's injury was not a positive one for the team. Brezina injured his spinal column, ending his football career.

"One of our starters got injured and will not play ever again," Rhodes said. "To us, it's never a good moment, especially to lose a guy like Brad. From that point on I battled for the position with another player until the Virginia Tech game when I played the entire game."

From his coach on how he got the starting job:

"What Matt did opposed to the other player was that he raised the bar," Georgia Tech offensive line coach Joe D'Alessandris said. "He continued to develop, grow and produce until earning the starting position. His consistency on the field ultimately earned him that job."

And on his job in the spring:

"For right now he is our starting left guard," D'Alessandris said. "He deserves that opportunity going into next season. Unless he loses it or someone beats him out. One of the things that we noticed about Matt from his high school tapes was the way he could adjust on the move. To me, he was one of the better ones that I had seen do that and that is just a credit to him."
