Hoops Fix

ELDER'S STATUS UNCERTAIN

GT'S HEWITT REACHES THE TOP THE RIGHT WAY
Coach Hewitt on his philosophy with players:

''My goal is very, very simple,'' Hewitt said. ''I tell the players all the time that when they leave here I want them to have had an experience that allows them to earn a living either with their degree or basketball ability. I don't care about their social life. They will thank me and appreciate me if they walk away from here and they have a degree and had a good basketball career.

''A Georgia Tech degree is well-respected and has a lot of value. That's why I push them, and, of course, I'm concerned that they have a good time and enjoy their college experience, though that's not a top priority for me.''

Coach on his current job:

"There is nothing else I could ask for,'' Hewitt said. ''I'm coaching in the ACC. I have a great administration. They are paying me a heck of a lot money than I ever could have dreamed. For all intents and purposes, I've made it to where I want to go and if I'm around this thing long enough and recruit hard enough we will get back to the Final Four and have a chance to win the national championship.''
